		<description>Unmake is a collaborative creative research practice that draws together

practitioners

 from varied disciplines.
 Unmaking across the scales of art, furniture, architecture and research.

To Unmake, is to Untether.&#38;nbsp;

Unmake Studio dissolves the distinction between architecture, sculpture, furniture, and event or ritual practice – looking to create collaborative works that move across varied scales and disciplines.
We are involved in critical spatial practices that focus on unmaking dualistic spatial experiences, shifting toward an experiential understanding of a globally entangled and relational planet.
We both make, design, write, teach, cook, and host events. In these pursuits we collaborate with varied disciplines, artists, and trades.&#38;nbsp;
This website acts as an archive and entanglement of our works. Moving across individual pursuits, collaborations, commisions, pedagogical projects, built, unbuilt, written and performed. It acts as a growing network of sites, materials, relationships and people that we are commited to growing and fostering through our creative research and practice.&#38;nbsp;

We welcome collaborations, commisions and coversations in relation to any of the works displayed, or future projects.&#38;nbsp;

	Unmake is an ongoing collaboration between Emerald Wise, and D’Arcy Newberry-Dupé.&#38;nbsp;

	Established in 2022, Unmake draws together the duo’s skills in the fields of Architecture, Research and Making.
 This coming together represent’s Wise and Newberry-Dupé’s desire to give attention to, explore and experiment with spaces, materials and making methods from object to architectural scales.&#38;nbsp;
Each project draws on different connections and mediums through which our collective grows and engages with new collaborators and materials.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Emerald Wise

PhD Candidate, The University of Newcastle
Bachelor of Environmental Design UWA
Masters of Architecture MSD
CV

Emerald is a creative practitioner, academic, and educator, in the expanded field of architecture, whose work revolves around ways of looking at the world and embodied processes for enacting knowledge.

Her creative and academic practices are intertwined and inseparable. They are centred on a ceaseless pursuit of experiential knowledge, where she designs and enacts practices for isolating the varied layers of spatial perception within experience and interrogating how they each contribute to our sense of being in space. For Emerald creative practice is a form of daily research, wherein she reconceives the sublime, not as a moment of profound accidental capture, but as a methodology for the pursuit of experiential knowledge, that involves an incremental alteration to our perceptual constancies. Her practice involves writing, drawing, making, skiing, flying, diving, healing practices that are centred on proprioception, and various meditation practices centred on altering perceptual experience.

She co-founded UNMAKE, and the architectural practice Whispering Smith - which she left in 2018 - and has participated in the activation of numerous studio and exhibition spaces. She has taught architecture and visual communications, for over a decade, across various institutions in Australia including, Monash University, RMIT, The University of Newcastle, The University of Western Australia, and Curtin University, as well as teaching internationally (online) at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Canada. She is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Newcastle, where she draws on research in perceptual neuroscience to examine how various sensory modalities and cognitive processes layer into one another to enact the different scales of spatial experience. Within this framework, she questions how task dependant sensory prejudices condition not only our ontology but our epistemology and pursuit thereof.

	D’Arcy Newberry-Dupé

Associate Lecturer, The University of Newcastle
Bachelor of Design (Architecture)&#38;nbsp;Masters of Architecture&#38;nbsp;

D’Arcy
Newberry-Dupé &#38;nbsp;is a creative practitioner and academic in the expanded field
of Architecture. The works she produces focus on drawing out event based architectures, which focus on domestic rituals, and the role of design in rural Australian contexts. This practice
is explored through Unmake Studios, and her collaborations with other research collectives - in particular the Global Extraction Observatory, who look at bringing the skills of architecture to the climate crisis and the denuded landscapes of extractive industries.&#38;nbsp;
Her in progress PhD at the University of
Newcastle fosters this tangle of practices into a ‘ritual architecture’ that looks to the
dynamic, mutually defining confluence between bodies, buildings, landscapes and events.

She has worked in practice for ODE Architecture Studio and Peter Stutchbury Architecture, and for the last six years has maintained an engagement with academic teaching across several Australian institutions. This includes fixed term positions and sessional teaching at The University of Newcastle, Monash University and RMIT, as well as teaching internationally (online) at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Canada.&#38;nbsp;In her current role as Associate Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, she expands this creative practice based research and teaching.
D’Arcy has contributed to several built and research projects in landscape architecture and residential practice that have been the recipients of state and national level awards from AILA, AIA and Good Design Awards. She has recently been awarded the Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship by the NSW Architects Registration Board, for her project ‘Killing Our Darling’s, and has presented her work internationally at the 20th AHRA Conference ‘Situated &#38;nbsp;Ecologies&#38;nbsp; of Care’.&#38;nbsp;in Portsmouth, UK, Performance Space 2024 in Nafplio, Greece and AMPS 2024 Urban Futures - Cultural Pasts, in Barcelona, Spain.&#38;nbsp;

This collective residency involved the visual, theatrical, and spatial occupation of 54 Errol St, that beckoned the public to crawl out of their isolation caves and reclaim the city body as part of their own. In this space the mouth and the hand became thresholds for a gustatory and somatic graffiti that softens the boundaries between the physical body, and the body of the space that surrounds us.&#38;nbsp;

Over the duration of a month (March 2023) the interdisciplinary collective of Artists, Architects, Designers, DJ’s and Makers curated and altered the space and facilitated public events. Exploring the softening of the boundaries between the physical body and city body, the installation pieces acted as a shifting topography to hold and capture event, activity and interaction between matter, bodies and space. The events held, cumulative drawing and mapping projects that capture these interactions, and the hard and light installations that occur as reactions to these events, emerge from and entangle a central table piece (Table Terrain) as the loci of activity.
While locked in our homes we have lost our intimate connection with the public sphere. This project invites us back out as the territorial animals we are to take a turn around the block and ‘piss on the tree’ so to speak. Rescuing our wonderous city from becoming merely abstract space and expanding our sense of self back into the greater body of the place we inhabit.

The shopfront is transformed into a stage for an ongoing performance piece that involves making, eating, altering, questioning, and yarning about the past and future of our selves and cities - perverting public space with private thoughts, the space offers a place of grieving and reclamation of the previously celebrated act of communal rituals of gathering and sharing - those activities that in recent times have gone through a transformation from wholesome to illicit, routine to taboo. So too, it offers a space to reconnect with our bodies, and those of the surrounding community. Bodies who have become sites of suspicion, resurrecting the hand and mouth as mediator between self and world, recalling them from their outcast as the zones of contagion and elicitors of disgust.
This project was completed with support from Creative Spaces, and funded by City of Melbourne.&#38;nbsp;

	Synaesthetic Supper was a dinner party and performance hosted in the Errol Street Residency over a three hour period.&#38;nbsp;The below text is an excerpt from an essay detailing the project, written for publication in Doubt by D’Arcy Newberry-Dupé.

HOST
Origin -&#38;nbsp;Latin, derived from the following words:
hospes (host)&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

hospit (guest)
hostis (stranger, enemy) &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
hostia
(victim) &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Definitions:

 a person or group who receives or entertains other
 people as guests.
 an animal, plant or body of tissue on or
 in which a parasite or commensal organism is
 harboured, or lives.
 ARCHAIC an army. In biblical terms, a
 reference to Angels.
 a portion of bread consecrated in
 the Eucharist. (Holy communion in Christian Churches).
 a hardware device that has the capability
 of permitting access to a network. (Digital).
&#38;nbsp;

What is it
to host? By the measure of the above entomologies and definitions, that track
from person to place, ephemeral presence to bread, guest unto enemy, stranger
to victim, we find ourselves in constant negotiation with the presence of an
ever-evolving host.

This negotiation, and the realms
and roles of the host are the site of inquiry for the following series of actions
and events that draw into and explore the ritual of hosting as a shared, and
mutually defining practice.

The worlding for this project begins
with the loci for the residency, the Tableterrain. This landing site,&#38;nbsp; is
the site for a mapping ground that captures the design actions of the hosting
practice: the preparation of the space, the presentation and performance of the
food to be consumed, the consummation, the aftermath and mess made, the erasure
and cleansing.

A layered thick drawing, in the form of a foodscape is envisaged, a dinner party for 24
participants, curating people and place and bread.
The table is set, recipes are
recalled (another form of host, holding stories, memories and histories).

100 tacos are hand rolled,
pressed and baked on site.

Mounds of fragrant rice reflects
the opposite of the pit it is pressed into and cast back onto the surface as
solid.

Snaking streams of scallion oil
wind through ethereal clouds of micro planed Manchego that melt on touch as
they feather onto the hot oozing black bean.

The capture of the consummation
is hosted in parallel – as we draw in food, our collaborator Stephanie Eather
draws with charcoal in elevation, 8 metres of paper pinned vertically to the
adjacent wall mirror the tables horizontal length. Over the course of the three-hour
event, her focus is the living bodies in the room. The tilt of their necks as
they listen, the flutter of hands as they pass and reach and plunge into my
thick drawn medium. Eather’s practice is dedicated to observational, mimetic
drawing produced through a dynamic flow state séance between self and subject.
The final panel capturing site, bodies and event in a tangle of living marks.

The aftermath and erasure
of the event folds in another layer, the landscape twice consumed that we discover
in the morning. Scraps and smears and fragments scattered across the body-site.

 The table is
stripped, and hot water poured and sponged across its unruly surface, spilling
onto the floor. An hour is spent as we cleanse the site, working our way along
it length, carefully bathing each pit, pool, platform and ridgeline.&#38;nbsp;
The space returned, ready to host again.&#38;nbsp;

	&#38;nbsp;A table, 8 metres in length, 1.2 metres in width.
The table is constructed from 3D printed biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), coated in a water based,&#38;nbsp; low VOC foodgrade epoxy. Custom steel forms a bracket around extruded 3D printed legs, that draw down from the voids in the surface.
Hand built, stepped terracotta bowls inserted into the voids act as removable vessels,&#38;nbsp; alongside permentantly inset stone plinths made from reclaimed offcuts of onyx, marble and terracotta pavers.

In its form, in its bodily tissue, it hosts the site upon which the Errol Street Residency’s various ritual event’s are to occur.
A body of landscape situated in the interior, rescaled and
abstracted.
 Across 8 metres of undulating pits, pools, platforms and ridgelines
this abstracted landscape makes the surface – offering the places of extraction
and consumption as vessels for digestion.
A very particular kind of Country is
held in this body – six major open cut mine sites, and their denuded contexts
are curated and compiled into a fictive terrain. These sites that make the
whole, are scattered across the expansive territory of Australia’s extractive
landscape, some still actively being consumed, others temporarily exhausted,
several considered dead.

This unliving body, these ‘dead’
sites of extraction are captured and abstracted into matter – the physicality in the absence of
the open cut, articulated in the stepped terracotta bowls that slice through
the articulated horizontal plane.&#38;nbsp;
The table is built in six segments, and is disassembled after use.&#38;nbsp;
